PVC or carpet? What you’re really landing on when you fall off the wall
As climbers, we obsess over holds, routes, shoes—even chalk. But there’s one part of the climbing experience we rarely think about… until we hit it: the mat. More specifically, what covers it.
Have you ever fallen and landed on a smooth, slightly cold PVC surface? Or perhaps sunk into something softer, textured like the floor of your living room? It might seem trivial — but the difference is very real.
PVC: the king of cleanliness and practicality
PVC is the go-to choice for many gyms, and for good reason. It’s easy to wipe down, resistant to sweat, chalk, and the occasional spilled water bottle. In a world where hygiene matters more than ever, a mat covering that looks good as new after a single swipe? That’s gold.
But it’s not all perfect. PVC can get slippery — especially when chalk builds up. And on hot days, it can feel sticky. Not exactly the coziest place to rest between burns.
Carpet: comfort, silence, and a touch of class
Carpet, on the other hand, offers something PVC simply doesn’t: comfort. It’s softer underfoot, doesn’t slip as easily, and feels more natural when you kneel, sit, or lie down to read the wall. In many modern gyms, carpet-covered mats are a stylistic and tactile choice.
It also hides chalk better, offering a cleaner visual experience. And perhaps best of all, it’s quieter. No squeaking footfalls echoing through the gym. The downside? Cleaning. Vacuuming, deep scrubbing, and dealing with moisture all require more effort than a simple PVC wipe-down.
