Making climbing walls feel natural
Volumes are made to recreate the uneven surface of real rocks. They provide climbing walls with depth. They usually don’t have any holds or macros attached to them and aren’t a part of any specific route. However, they can be of great help when sending most problems.
At Woodplastix, a volume’s journey starts with the wall panel’s exit from one of our CNC machining centres. In manufacturing, minimising waste is essential. Once the panels are carved out, the remaining plywood goes in for another round – to make volumes. Our technicians ensure their schematics are fitted in a way that leaves very little of our materials unused. The machine’s high precision is enhanced by the indispensible dexterity of the experienced worker.
Upon receiving files with basic shapes and dimensions, our technicians add colour and width and “close” the surplus surfaces in the model. While the overall production path is similar to that of the panels, special attention is paid to the angles under which the holes are drilled, as these must be precisely calculated for each hole. Unlike the panels, most of our volumes have more-or-less standard designs, which come in all shapes and sizes. While most volumes are produced from the wood left over from panel processing, some designes are so huge that they require brand new sheets.
Following CNC processing, volumes are sent to finishing, where they are given over to other experienced hands for polishing, painting, varnishing or covering with sand. As usual, every next step includes thorough inspection of the product, to ensure that each item is of equally high – indeed the highest – quality.
