Fibreglass in industry: how panels and enclosures keep critical systems running – Part II
Low weight that improves installation and lifecycle costs
Enclosures are often installed in inconvenient places: rooftops, remote infrastructure sites, poles, elevated platforms, or tight plant corridors. Fibreglass enclosures are typically lighter than steel alternatives, which can reduce:
- lifting equipment requirements
- crew size and installation time
- transport cost
- structural support needs
The result is not just a “lighter box,” but a system that is easier to deploy and maintain.
Design freedom that reduces parts and failure points
Metal enclosures often require multiple parts welded or bolted together—seams, joints, brackets, stiffeners, and secondary reinforcement. Fibreglass can integrate many of these features into the molded form: mounting points, ribbing, cable channels, gasket seats, and protective hoods can be built into the enclosure geometry.
That integration can mean fewer fasteners, fewer welded seams, fewer corrosion points, and fewer leak paths—especially valuable when achieving reliable sealing and long-term performance.
Fibreglass vs. common alternatives: the practical differences
Fibreglass isn’t a universal replacement, but it frequently wins on “total performance over time.”
Versus steel, fibreglass offers far better corrosion resistance and electrical insulation, often at lower maintenance cost. Steel may still win in high-abuse settings or where hot work repairs are expected.
Versus aluminium, fibreglass can be better for insulation and chemical resistance, while aluminum can be preferred for heat dissipation and certain structural needs.
Versus standard plastics, fibreglass usually provides greater stiffness and stability for larger panels and enclosures, especially under load and temperature cycling, while plastics may win on very high-volume, smaller molded parts.
In the real world, the decision is often about the environment: if corrosion, insulation, and longevity dominate, fibreglass moves up the list quickly.
